Google is introducing a new security function on Android 15 to enhance peace of mind. The feature, known as “robber mode,” will safeguard your device by promptly locking the screen if someone attempts to snatch it from you while you’re out and about.
Android 15 beta 2 includes a “snap mode” feature that prevents the mobile device from being used.
This intelligent function, known as “Theft Detection Lock,” utilizes Google’s AI technology to recognize unusual activities, such as an individual attempting to snatch your phone and flee.
When you’re out and about, if someone attempts to steal your phone, the “Theft Detection Lock” feature will activate and lock your phone’s screen, stopping the thief from getting to your information.
This innovation is particularly beneficial in Brazil, where it can be valuable in scenarios such as the notorious “bike gang” scheme, where thieves target unaware individuals to snatch their phones.
Google is adding further security features. For instance, the screen will be blocked if someone attempts to unlock your mobile multiple times without success. Additionally, access to the device’s contents will be locked if a thief tries to disconnect it repeatedly.
When and on which devices
Google plans to extend the “thieving mode” feature to devices running Android 10 by 2024, ensuring users can benefit from the anti-theft function without needing to upgrade to Android 15.
Some devices that continue to operate on Android 10 include:
- Samsung Galaxy S10
- Samsung Galaxy Note 9
- ASUS Zenfone 6
- Huawei P30
- Xiaomi Redmi Note 7
- Pocophone F1 and F2
- LG G8s and G7
