Google Chrome, the most widely used browser globally, is now 72% faster according to a Speedometer 3 benchmark. The improvement has been notable from version 101 to version 127, currently in testing on the Dev channel, over the past two years. This progress has enhanced the browser’s efficiency and optimization.

Version 127 of Google Chrome achieved nearly 40 points on Speedometer 3, almost doubling the score of version 101, which had reached 21 to 22 points, as reported on the official Chromium blog.

Thomas Nattestad, Google Chrome’s product director, emphasized the importance of the benchmark platform in pinpointing optimization opportunities.

Targeted optimizations were done for each feature, leading to an improvement in the Chrome score.

What enhancements were made?

The SpaceSplitString function, a notable technical enhancement, now processes space-separated strings into lists more efficiently by eliminating redundant checks. Moreover, Chrome simplifies document layout by comparing and merging duplicate page style sheets.

Memory allocation for tracking vector paths was optimized to enhance browser performance. Chrome frequently introduces performance control options in its updates, including a recent feature that enables users to adjust memory usage at three levels: Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum.

Google Chrome remains the top browser globally, holding a market share of around 65% across PC and mobile devices. Microsoft Edge is the second most used browser on PCs, at 13.14%, but lags behind Apple Safari on mobile platforms in terms of popularity.
