Streaming subscribers are facing challenges as various platforms raise subscription prices, such as Disney+ and Spotify. Although Max is also increasing its price, this change currently does not impact users in Brazil.
Max becomes pricier in the United States.
Max’s pricing for plans in the US will be updated starting on Tuesday, June 4th. The ad-free and annual plans will see price increases, while the ad plan will remain the same.
The new prices will take effect immediately for new subscriptions, whereas existing subscribers will receive a notification 30 days before the increase, which will apply to their billing cycle starting from July 4, 2024. Annual subscribers will only experience the price increase upon plan renewal.
The sudden price change surprised unsuspecting customers, who wondered why this increase was happening just before the second season premiere of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” on June 16.
Why the rise in numbers?
Warner Bros. Discovery explained that the price hikes were aimed at boosting the streaming service’s profitability and attracting cost-conscious consumers to choose the ad-supported plan. In Q1 2024, the company’s streaming segment maintained revenue at $2.46 billion, while EBITDA profit rose to $86 million from $50 million in the previous year.
It is probable that Brazil will experience a price increase similar to the one announced in the US, with a slight delay in timing. No official price changes have been announced for Latin America at this time.
