WhatsApp will no longer be supported on basic mobile phones using the KaiOS operating system starting in early 2025. The decision was made without a specific explanation on the KaiOS website. This operating system is commonly found on Nokia, Positive, and Multilaser devices that provide simple and cost-effective options for consumers.
WhatsApp will no longer be supported on mobile devices running KaiOS.
KaiOS is a system created from the previous Firefox OS, tailored for simple phones without touchscreens. Although WhatsApp support was discontinued, the company stated that it regularly assesses older devices and software, implying that the absence of necessary updates and features for WhatsApp could be the cause of this decision.
Users who have not linked their devices to WhatsApp or who have terminated the connection before June 25, 2023, will no longer have access to the app. Those with active WhatsApp on their devices can continue using it until the start of 2025.
WhatsApp recently updated its compatibility requirements to include Android OS 5.0 or higher and iOS 12 or higher. As a result, around 17 models of Android smartphones and iPhones no longer have support.
Models that are impacted
The WhatsApp support page currently includes JioPhone and JioPhone 2 among the devices compatible with KaiOS 2.5.0 and later versions. However, this support will be ending soon, impacting all devices running on this operating system version.
Currently, there is no update regarding alterations to WhatsApp’s functionality on Android and iOS platforms. The decision to discontinue support appears to be directed solely towards basic KaiOS phones.
